How It Works
Looking for an entertaining and educational event that emphasizes the values of acceptance, patience and hard work?
I partner with local dance schools and companies to do a wonderful story/dance event based on my picture book, Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig, which is about two pigs with big dreams—Gwendolyn wants to dance and her best friend, Omar, wants to play football.
The performance can be done in elementary schools, recitals, and in Black Box Theaters. A narrator (usually, but not necessarily, me) reads a short portion of the book and then the dancers dance out that part of the story and we alternate in that manner throughout the book (see videos). Alternating the reading and the dancing makes the story and the dancing very understandable and very entertaining for the children. In elementary schools, we do a 25 minute version. For theaters and recitals, the performance can be expanded to around 45 minutes. In elementary schools, after the book reading/dancing, we have a question and answer session (10 minutes). Kids (and teachers) love it!
Because budgets are tight, we provide the event to elementary schools at no cost. We just ask that the elementary school make the book available to any parents who might be interested in purchasing an autographed book for their child through a Pre-Event Book Order Form. The elementary school does NOT have to purchase anything. Nor does the ballet school or company. There no purchasing fees or licensing fees. The ballet school or company makes money from the event. Kindergarten through 4th grade is the ideal audience, and even for the youngest kids, the event holds everyone’s attention.
